Giraffe Class Reception

Giraffe Class

Giraffe Class is where children start their journey at St Nicholas.

Reception is where children build their early writing, reading and maths skills alongside learning about themselves and the world around them.

We use the Early Years framework to shape our cross-curriculum approach, allowing children to learn through engaging and interactive tasks either with an adult or independently in the classroom.

We have an outdoor space that children have access to throughout the day and we regularly go on local walks around the village.

Our mornings consist of a more structured learning approach that mirrors what they’ll experience further up the school using Read Write Inc for our daily phonics lesson, adult initiated maths and literacy tasks, and regular reading with an adult.

The afternoons are more flexible and can include outdoor explorers, PE, music lessons, art activities, role play, or pretty much anything else the children show interest in.

Weekly Book Swap Update!

Weekly Book Swap at school will now be happening every WEDNESDAY in term time from 2.30-3.30pm in the Giraffe Class garden, starting from the SECOND week of term (it is not possible to do a book swap in the first week).  Please bring your completed books to drop off and swap for new ones.  You can pick up two new reading books and also a free choice book each week.  Please observe 2m social distancing rules when on site and use the anti bac gel provided before touching the books.

Please come in through the back gate by the public car park, enter the garden through the playground and then exit through the side garden gate and back up to the back gate, to help with social distancing.

Summer Term Update: Greta and the Giants

This term in Giraffe Class we have been navigating this unusual time by continuing to learn through play and the world around us. One of Miss Brombley’s favourite stories is “Greta and the Giants” which is based on the real-life story of Greta Thunberg who wanted to make the world around her a better place. We enjoyed learning about this topic and different ways we can look after our world. Some of this was writing or drawing, some of it was research and posters, and some of it was getting out and appreciating our world.

We've also been working very hard on our home learning- using the learning projects or videos that Miss Brombley shares with us. Wherever we've been spending time during lockdown, Giraffe Class always find ways to learn through play, creating and exploring the things around us.

Remember, all activities on our home learning page can be done at your, and your child's pace and you are free to pick and choose what you would like to get involved in.  There are many different activities just to give a variety but it is not the expectation that you complete them all. The priority is well being for everyone during this challenging time!
